Back in the day, a single train could be taken all the way from Bangkok
to Singapore. These trains would terminate at Singapore's Tanjong Pagar
Railway Station. Extremely security conscious, Singapore shut down the
Singapore portion of this journey in 2011. The rail line, traveling the
length of the island, north to south, is now nearly forgotten save for
the occasional steel bridge that can be seen when traveling down Bukit
Timah Road. Today, the entire length of the old rail line has morphed
into the "Green Corridor", a wild and a bit rough trail used by walkers,
runners and bikers. The Green Corridor, as the old rail line did,
terminates at Tanjong Pagar. The old station will be closed for good as
it is converted to a modern space but we were lucky to join the final
public event held there last weekend. We joined hundreds for a food and
flea market type affair labelled a Thai festival but barely that. It was
great to see the old, art deco station before it closes up and, someday, re-opens as a museum or refurbished public space. And, wow, did the boys ever enjoy getting together for games at our friends' home after the event -- we'll make boardgamers of them yet!
