Ash has always been kind of a rebel -- interested in adventure and the bending of rules. These are traits we share and that brought us together. Even as a mother, she continues to look for ways to explore. For this reason, when I told her about a conversation that I had had with a 40-year veteran hiker in the wilds of Singapore, she immediately put his recommended hike on the top of her list of things to do on Mothers' Day. We began at the Upper Pierce Reservoir (to which we had to hitch hike -- definitely something that isn't done in Singapore) and, following the hiker's directions, walked the length of the dam before ducking into the underbrush and hedge at the end in order find a gap in the fence that allowed us to enter the Singapore Island Country Club grounds. We followed the fringe of the golf course before finally being caught by security at the 17th hole where they politely asked us where we were headed. When it had been established that we had snuck in, they had a couple golf carts sent over, gave us a bunch of cold waters, and drove us to the golf course gate from where we continued the hike into the Macritchie Reservoir wilderness, before arriving at another golf course. This time, the trail was public and beautiful. All in all, we walked a good 13 kilometers and are proud to say that Ko did most of that himself, too -- quite the accomplishment. All this in celebration of Ash, the best mother our boys could have. Happy Mothers' Day!
