Super Heroes

With the busy days they get through every day, keeping smiles on their faces the whole time, and the energy they bringing to learning and discovering the world around them, our boys are our super heroes.

Sunday Streets and Shakespeare in the Park

Ten city blocks shut down to car traffic and opened to walkers, skateboarders, bikers, rollerskaters, and anyone else self-propelling themselves. Can't get betrter than this and the street parties that these Sunday Streets events inevitably turn into are always great fun!  We still have mount our own bubble machine onto our new, giant bike and some LED light strings wouldn't hurt either...  Next time!

Off the Grid

These last few years, we've witnessed a lot of changes in the Presidio. First, one of the most beautiful old buildings in the Main Post was renovated and re-opened as the Inn at the Presidio. Then, another building became the Walt Disney Family Museum. Since then, the Doyle Drive Project has transformed the highway system connecting San Francisco to the Golden Gate Bridge through the Presidio. Finally, the old Officer's Club has just re-opened after a prolonged renovation. San Francisco's oldest building is ready to see visitors again! With all those changes, the Presidio has been hosting a lot of family events, too, including the very popular "Off the Grid" picnic on Sundays. That name may not be so appropriate any more -- the Presidio is not feeling as "off the grid" as it once did. More relevant to us than all of that, however, is that we've seen our rent go up about 30% in 3 years. All that other work has to be funded somehow, right?

Camping at Sugarloaf Ridge

We discovered this summer that the boys like camping so much that we decided to book one weekend of camping per month for this entire year. September's camping trip took place this weekend and we camped at a State Park we never even knew existed: Sugarloaf Ridge SP near Sonoma. It's a beautiful park and the campground was a refreshingly dust-free and clean experience compared to the Middle School camping trip that I was part of last week. Any complaints the boys may have had were remedied by having their buddies Benjamin and Ian there with them and, the smores didn't hurt, either.

The Birthday Celebration

Somewhere amongst the craziness that was the middle school camping trip that I chaperoned for 3 days last week, I turned 37. I'm so old.

Rai is 64 Months Old, Kotaru is 46 Months Old!

August was a busy month with our 7-day camping trip on the way home from the cabin and then a few weeks of preparing for back to school/back to work. With all the activity, I forgot to celebrate the boys' monthly birthdays. So, a month later, here we are...

Back to the West Point

Our last two visits to the West Point Inn were so wonderful that we really wanted to visit and stay for the night again, without waiting until next summer. Somehow, we found one available room for this past Friday evening and decided to make it an early birthday present for me. Once again, we had an amazing time even though we didn't get our traditional cabin #12. We had to stay in the main lodge this time, given the boys a great bed to jump on. The sunrise, too, was not as spectacular as the one this summer but I still can't think of a better way to start the day then to hike up to the summit of Mt.Tam at 6 in the morning, above a sea of fog as far as the eye can see.  Perhaps most rewarding, however, was seeing the boys, on their third visit, embrace this mountain home and make it an extension of their many "homes". This time, they entered the West Point confident and safe. They knew every nook and cranny of the place, every stairwell and room, every secret passage and trail. They were at home and they were happy. When can we return?!
