Every year, about this time, the hills of ice plant around Baker Beach bloom with beautiful purple flowers and, every year, we've taken a photo of Rai with the succulents. This year, the usual location of this photo has seen the death of many of its succulents so we had to find a new spot closer to our apartment. These comparison photos truly capture Rai's growth and development these past few years -- wow!

Last year, to celebrate Rai's 4th birthday, we teamed up with 3 other families to make the organizing of the birthday party a more manageable affair. This year, we decided to continue that trend. Now, we had 5 turning 5 and the combined efforts of five families brought the kids of Phoebe Hearst Preschool the ultimate birthday party. A great time was had by all and the entertainer, Jungle Joe, was as big a hit with the kids as we have ever seen. Actually, we've never seen a room of four to seven year olds as engaged as they were for his puppet and magic show. Another day, another very memorable event. Rai will remember his fifth birthday for a long, long time to come (as will Maggie, Penelope, Olivia, and Zara) !

If this is how we feel now, I can't imagine what the tenth birthday will be like. Celebrating Rai's 5th birthday brings as much a mix of emotions as anything we've ever been through. It's like each extreme tugs at us, trying to firmly establish itself as the prevailing emotion of the day. We're so proud of Rai and the boy he has become but, on the other hand, we can't believe he's growing up so quickly and that time is slipping through our fingers. We just have to enjoy every day and remember that each stage is wonderful and rewarding. Happy Birthday, Rai -- you are such a beautiful, little boy. And, again, we can't thank Grandma and Grandpa enough for putting together a special party that you'll never forget! Oh, and that cake! Somehow Grandma created, in real life, the exact cake only a little boy's imagination could dream up...

treasure hunts. Rai and Ko followed clever, rhyming clues in search of a bounty of goodies hidden throughout the home. These kinds of memories last forever -- thanks, Grandma and Grandpa for giving our boys another Easter to remember!

Today, Ko turns 42 months old, every day getting closer to the big 4th birthday (which we can't wait for!) Ko, unlike Rai, has really taken to the "terrible threes". These days, he's a little bi-polar -- one moment super sweet and loving, the next letting the world know that he's unhappy about something. We'll get through this. Happy birthday, little one!
