The Brothers Sequoia

Rai and Kotaru continue to become closer and closer. The brotherly bond we dreamed of and wished for from day one is starting to emerge and it's not just Ko following Rai around anymore. They each watch the other closely, learn from each other, and imitate one another's behavior. What a joy it is to watch our two boys grow into best friends. Meanwhile, we see a bit of Rai's sense of humor coming out in Ko...

Fort Point

One of the best spots in the city from which to admire the Golden Gate Bridge up close is Fort Point. The Fort is located literally at the foot of the Bridge so not only can you get a close look at the Bridge, but you can also get a feel for the grandeur of the Bridge. You can't help think, "that's a BIG Bridge" when you stand on the 3-story rooftop of the Fort, look up, and notice that the Bridge still looms over you... way, way over you.
But Bridge views aren't the only reason to visit the Fort at Fort Point. The Fort itself is an amazing piece of history. Built between 1853 and 1861, it is the only major naval fort of its kind west of the Mississippi. Although used to protect San Francisco Bay during the Gold Rush, during the Civil War, and even during WWII, it's guns never fired a single shot. Visitors can now see not only a U.S. maritime treasure, but also what has been called "one of the most perfect models of masonry in America." Well, that's all fun for the adults, but what about the kids? Rai says, "I like the cannons and cannon balls!"

Mt.Sutro... Again

A month (or so) ago, we posted about our first loop hike around Mt.Sutro. We've hiked the lower, eastern slopes many times, but never before had we made a full loop around the mount. We were so impressed with the northwestern trail that we've been anxious to hike it again. Yesterday afternoon, we made it happen and again we were reminded just how amazing it is to have this green space right in the center of the city. What a hike and finishing off on our very favorite block in all of S.F. (Edgewood) wasn't too bad, as well.

Kotaru is 500 Days Old and Rai is 1000 Days Old!

Today, Kotaru turned 500 days old. Though not widely recognized nor celebrated, it is a milestone of sorts, is it not? As we like to do, below, we compare Kotaru to Rai when he was 500 days old! Meanwhile, our boys are separated by about 500 days so, not long ago, Rai turned 1000 days old. Below, you can see how Rai has changed over the past 500 days, too!

Matt Damon

About a month ago, I showed Rai a Youtube clip of all the "Matt Damon" moments in Team America. I even said a few "Matt Damons" myself. Several weeks after that, we were driving in the car and, while telling a story, I used a voice similar to the Matt Damon voice. Immediately, Rai started shouting "Matt Damon" in his own "Matt Damon" voice. I couldn't believe it. Not only was his comic timing perfect, but I was amazed that he had made such a connection, especially several weeks apart. Matt Damon!

Rai is 34 Months Old!

With all his preschool friends turning 3, Rai is talking about birthdays every day now. Today, he commented, sadly, in the back of the car, "I missed my birthday. It was last week. I forgot about it." It took a big effort on our part to remind him that his birthday is still 2 months away and that we'll be sure to celebrate it. In the meantime, Rai can live vicariously through the parties of all his little preschool buddies as each one in turn leaves the terrible twos behind and enters the world of the three year old.

I spent a few hours wandering around Chinatown with Kotaru the other day and was reminded that we don't have to go far to see something a little exotic. S.F. Chinatown really is it's own little world, distinct and separate from the city around it.

Discovery Museum

Will Ashe stayed home to study hard, the boys and I made yet another visit to the Bay Area Discovery Museum in Sausalito. The boys love it there so frequent visits are a must. To mix it up a bit this time, we also made a drive through the hills above Sausalito. Some very lucky people live in some pretty amazing homes with some pretty amazing views! Meanwhile, the new willow branch sculpture/shelter/maze at the Discovery Museum is awesome!
